I couldn’t stand history all through public school and now I understand why! I won’t repeat these mistakes with my children now.

I am very much enjoying this podcast and appreciate both of your perspectives. I first looked over the fourth edition of TWTM many years ago and honestly, I was completely overwhelmed by it. I then fell in to the ideas of Charlotte Mason. I did, although read an excellent article by Susan regarding the similarities between classical education and Charlotte Mason, and it really made sense. I’ve always felt very intimidated to approach this type of education in our home feeling like I would have to buy a boxed curriculum such as a Memoria press that just makes me kind of twitch thinking about it. I think I need to revisit the TWTM again, and try to implement this way of teaching.

This was really helpful as well as encouraging. I’m looking into switching my daughter to MWC. I also would really love to hear yours and Kate’s recommendations for Algebra 1 and higher level math as I am searching for what to do with my son right now. We’ve been using Saxon and he’s good at math, but he dislikes math. I feel Saxon has killed any joy in it even though I modify it a lot to fit his needs and I’ve done my best to help him make those connections in math that you discussed in this episode. Saxon is just A LOT and it’s boring. I’m getting to a stage where even though I’m good at math and I like math, I don’t feel like I’m going to have to energy to make sure I’m keeping up with reviewing algebra and higher levels of math to be able to teach my son well. What curriculum do you recommend for the high school levels?

My kid loves Math With Confidence so much, it is the perfect sweet spot between conceptual and procedural for us. I also appreciate Kate noting that even high schoolers shouldn't be expected to teach themselves math independently.

This was a great podcast! Plenty to ponder. I have a mathy 4th grade kid who has flown through MUS Epsilon and Beast Academy level 4 and loves both programs. We include Life of Fred and Math picture books in morning time, but more for his younger sister who struggles more with math than him. I want to avoid hitting the calculus wall that you spoke about but am unsure what to do from here. Do I just let him keep going while he is happy and enjoying maths and slow down when he starts to get stuck? He is my get in and get maths done guy and doesn't enjoy lots of games etc in his school so it is hard to slow him down that way.

My kid died last night 😂

I was in the veterinary medical field and now homeschool so this hit me where I live.

Last year we paired Wilder bo[KS with the Evan Moor history pockets about Native American tribes. It was a great balance for my third grader.

I'm fine with most things in book.i draw the line at the 'n' word. But I don't shy away from real life concepts. There is a question of hermeneutics here that is important. The radical turn in hermeneutics in the 18th and 19th century seen through the critical Marxist/postmodern worldview is the way most of us learn how to read and interpret a text. I'm for learning how other people talk and think, rather than conforming all texts to the way I think everyone should talk and think. Charlie Brown for example presents archetypes of people. They are unkind to each other. Some parents are shocked I encourage my son to watch it. But as we have more discussions as he gets older, I'm going to have a reference to point too. For example talking about feminism I might reference Lucy and how she has a lot of conflict between her love for Schroeder and her Women's Lib worldview. I don't think there is a lot of reasons to sensor ideas from books. But I do believe there are some.

So we just finished Robinson Crusoe as the kids wanted to hear the book their favorite poem was about. That was a ride! o.O But I think the rushed ending was what bothered me the most, not the references to the cannibals. "I have just sent to rescue some other's from the mainland, but here's a way out so I'm just going to leave all of them instead of waiting in the bay for another week." He was more dense than anything. :p

Excellent podcast, thank you. I'll throw in my two cents: The classics are high quality literature that also provide a glimpse into the morality of the time that they are written. You can get angry at the way people used to think and experience the world, but I really don't see the point. It's more valuable to try to understand why they thought the way they did and how values of society vary and change over time and geography. Early american colonists did not have many experiences and perspectives on different cultures, for example. It's not too hard for a child to understand why they would react with fear to native americans and not think of them as fully human in that context. There is also a lot of antisemitism is the classics, but glossing over it or editing it out, isn't the right thing to do. It's really important that we see these prejudices and think about why they were there and how their effects persist today. I do feel that many homeschoolers go overboard trying to have their children only read books that reflect their own worldview and politics and that is true for both religious and secular homeschoolers. Contemporary historical fiction that tells history the way we want to hear it is en vogue, but the quality of the writing is so poor, I would even say "dumbed down" in an effort to get kids to easily absorb it's simplistic themes.

The Bravewriter lifestyle - yes (at least in a lot of ways) - Bravewriter as a curriculum - no. To me, it feels very much like that ball of yarn you talked about. Y'alls explanation of how some brains just don't work in that loosey goosey super creative way makes so much sense to me. 💡I also have to say that the way you explain the purpose of, and the structure and progression of narration in Writing with Ease (and here in brief), was nothing short of life changing. My little one and I were such failures at CM style narration. 😩

This was rather disappointing. Rather than a survey of where classical education is going this was a smear job and misrepresented history on a handful of moderate right education influencers/institutions that Mrs Bauer has had disagreement with for decades.

You sometimes confuse direct object and indirect object. Transitive verbs take a direct object, and intransitive verbs take an indirect object. It's an important distinction.

Ok.....this is creepy, why do you HAVE to show a naked person to an young adolescent? I understand learning about reproductive education but they don't have to stand around and look and point out all of nudity art to learn something? Besides you have to remember there are laws that forbid this exposure to young children.

For us it's Pride & Prejudice! If I have a headache, I frantically call for my kids to fetch the smelling salts. There's a girl in my daughter's ballet class named Darcie. "Little DAAAAAHHHH-CY, as she calls herself!" And so on. ;) Also, my kids love to memorize. They just learned "Try, Try Again" and go around chanting it. We also memorize manners. The other day I overheard my 6-year-old telling her brother "Hey! Remember, 'When someone tells you 'No' or 'Stop', stop immediately, apologize, and do not do it again!'" 😁
